We all know typical tours – you know exactly your route, accommodation, meals 3 times a day served in a restaurant, tour guide telling you bunch of historical facts. How about something different – to make that route, to test it, to go by off roads on military vehicle, to follow abandoned historical roads rediscovering history of 17-18th centuries, to have to stop at forest rangers houses, with hospitable villagers or in the tent? There won’t be choice of continental or American breakfast, but there will be dinners cooked at fire-camp, fresh fish from forest rivers, stories and songs by guitar.
You are not following the tour agenda – you will be creating one!
If you are up for game, next expedition is for you: “Salt – grey gold of Siberia”.
Group of enthusiasts of Siberian history and off-road trips will explore old trade route, which was once crucial of development of Siberia. Salt was not less important than gold and armory. If indigenous hunters and nomad tribes were getting enough salt intake from meat of animals eaten fresh or cooked, Russian explorers, soldiers and farmers needed salt for cooking and more importantly preserving food for surviving in long Siberian winters. Lack or absence of salt leads to brain dysfunction, lack of energy, as well as the whole range of other health issues. No wonder in medieval times, in many countries, including Russian and British empires, France and many others, salt was under state monopoly. In 1648 in Moscow infamous “Salt riot” started after prices of salt by government increased multifold. One of the turning points of Indian independence movement was “Salt march” by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. Not only insufficiency of salt reserves known at that time but also poor technologies of salt extraction made salt worth of gold. Experienced salt master had to stay up to 1,5 days non-stop for finishing full cycle of salt evaporation, assisted by 2 sub-masters. Any break of technology could lead to salt being cooked, burned or even destroying huge metal bowl used for salt crystallization. Salt master profession in 17th century Russia was valued higher than army person or goldsmith.
We will start from Krasnoyarsk heading 200 km toward north of Krasnoyarsk region, till Kazachinskoye village. Seemingly ordinary village dates it’s history back from 1650 and was founded by Cossacks from Ukraine. “Village inhabited by Cossacks”, in Russian language, sounds as “Kazachinskoye”. Once being strong fortress, nowadays it is famous for local talents, as well as keeping traditions of fold songs and dance. We hope we will be lucky to see one of their performances.
After Kazachinskoye we will cross Enisey river by ferry and will start 40 km forest road trip. It will be a real test of our vehicles UAZ-Patriot that had gone through military-grade tuning. At the end of that road we will enter village Troitsk, home for first salt manufactory in Eniseysk region, started in 1640. Our local scouts found abandoned 18th century manufactory facilities: salt tower for evaporation, grinder and other equipment. We will be able to re-imagine how salt was manufactured centuries ago. On a way back if time will permit we will see Eniseysk, former capital of Eniseysk region, practically front post of development of Central Siberia. Although nowadays it lost its administrative and industrial power, it still has its old time charm, wooden architecture, warm hospitality traditions. On the way back we will use highways, can chill and relax.

Program by day

Day 1

On an SUV we leave from Krasnoyarsk towards the village of Kazachinsky. Kazachinkoye is one of the oldest settlements in the Yenisei province. From ancient times, it was famous for its crafts and fairs. Walk around the village. The first point of the route is the Kazachinsky threshold, you can get to it along the coast through the old forest dam. The road winds through the forest, crosses streams and small rivers. Kazachinsky threshold is a natural obstacle on the main waterway, next to it is the village of the same name, and on the other side there are excavations. Petroglyphs were found here, which means that the village is not one thousand years old. Picnic overlooking the famous Kazachinsky rapids. You will see the most impassable site on the Yenisei. The fall of the river in this section exceeds 1 m per kilometer of length. Perhaps at this time a unique vessel will work here - the turret, the only one preserved in Russia. This is a tugboat that moves along a chain or cable laid along the bottom and helps guide vessels upstream. Next, on the ferry we cross to the other side of the Yenisei and move to the village of Kazanka. This is a Chuvash village. Locals came to Siberia through the Stolypin reform and carefully preserve their traditions and their language, as they did a hundred years ago. Here you will be treated to branded pies with wild garlic the size of a large palm, prepared according to an old recipe, and tell you how, by a miracle and cunning, they rescued Kazanka herself from the Kolchak army during the Civil War. Pectoral crosses, bayonets, and coins are still found everywhere. Home-style dinner. Overnight in the Chuvash hut in the village of Kazanka.

Day 2

Breakfast. Here, two more cars join us - the GAZ-66 and the tractor, which will help overcome the most difficult part of the journey. We go to the old Catherine tract. On the highway, they are waiting for us, as the locals say, swamps and mudflows - impassable sections that only prepared jeeps can overcome. A beginner will not see the road in the forest, but only the direction. Powerful technology will help us overcome these areas. A tractor on such a route is the main means of transportation. Lunch and dinner from the dishes prepared on the fire. We spend the night in a hunting hut. The bathhouse is black. The local hunters accompanying us tell hunting legends and were

Day 3

Breakfast. Then we continue moving towards Troitsk, where the old salt factory is located. The road along the Catherine tract is becoming more populated. You will learn the history of the Catherine tract and local villages. They say that in these places you can find a lot of interesting things, at least the old coins that were put during the construction of houses. Lunch is a picnic. Arrival in Troitsk. Factory tour. The Trinity Solzavod provided “gray gold” to the entire Yenisei province. History of the first industrial enterprise in eastern Siberia. You will see the brine tower and cedar barns, learn how salt was mined and stored 300 years ago. Accommodation in a guest house in with. Taseevo. Overnight.

Day 4

Breakfast. Taseevsky Museum of Local Lore - the last point of the expedition route, which combined the two regions of the region. Taseevskaya Republic during the Civil War. Stories and legends. Return to Krasnoyarsk. The end of the tour.
